Considered & Responsible Design

CONSIDERED AND RESPONSIBLE DESIGN

We are committed to reducing our environmental footprint through thoughtful design decisions. We carefully select materials that have a minimal environmental impact to conserve the planet's resources. Additionally, our designs prioritize durability, circularity, and comfort, emphasizing reuse, upcycling, and the use of recycled materials. (Refer to the Mwali section for details on our waste reduction and circularity initiative).

Materials Selection

All our material choices are selected based on a lifecycle approach, with natural resource conservation and circularity as top priorities. We follow the Preferred Fibre and Material Matrix (PFMM)* as a benchmarking tool during our product development process to assess various sustainability certifications and initiatives and their impact on people and the planet.

*Tool developed by Gap Inc. in 2020 further developed by Textile Exchange

Preferred Materials List

Cotton  - Clothing and accessories

  • A versatile, strong, breathable, natural, and renewable fibre.
  • Is traceable to the fibre source or Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified
  • Biodegaradbale under the right conditions of temperature, moisture and microorganisms

Man Mande Cellulosic Fibres (Viscose)  - Clothing

  • Responsible stewardship of the land used to grow trees for MMCFs (Man-Made Cellulosic Fibers) is essential as this accounts for 67% of our range which is why we will exclusively use Ecovero a branded Viscose fibre.
  • Biodegaradbale under the right conditions of temperature, moisture and microorganisms

Wool - Clothing

  • A natural, breathable, and resilient fibre, used as a blend with organic cotton for our knitwear ranges.
  • Requires little washing and therefore is a saves energy and water.
  • We only use RWS wool that is non museled

Waste Reduction

Waste is unavoidable in the fashion industry. At In Our Name, we hold our fabric suppliers to high standards, requiring them to proactively manage and dispose of their surplus stock responsibly.

We design our products with versatile trims such as buttons and zippers that can be used across multiple garments, reducing waste considerably. Additionally, we have established a circular strategy with our Tier 1 supplier, focusing on three primary waste management routes.

  • Fabric Offcuts, Hangers, and Sample Lengths - We recycle all fabric offcuts, fabric hangers, fabric sample lengths, and unmatchable sewing threads, using the shorter lengths for sampling, which are further repurposed for amends edits for samples and toiles.
  • Cutting Waste - We repurpose all waste measuring close to A4 size into washable sanitary pads, which we distribute free of charge.
  • Unusable Waste - Unusable waste is donated to a local upholster who repurposes
